Who We Are
HEARTS is a 501-c3 Christian faith-based group which endeavors to walk with the Lord in all we do. HEARTS was formed to support Virginia homeschooling families in eastern Loudoun and western Fairfax counties. The group is comprised of approximately 70 homeschooling families with roughly 100 homeschooled students in 7th-12th grades.
We invite you to explore our classes, teachers, and sports to see if our community is a good fit to support your homeschooling endeavor.
21 Years Serving Homeschool Families
HEARTS was started in the Spring of 1996. One of the first meetings was at the roller skating rink in Manassas, a social activity for the kids and a planning meeting for the moms. The initial intent was two-fold: an alternative to the church youth groups for social activities as those you had been homeschooling their children were moving into the teen years (siblings were included in the social activities hence the name of the group Home Educators’ Association for Responsible Teens and their Siblings) and some classes for difficult high school subjects.
The first classes were in the teachers’ homes and included Spanish and Composition & Grammar. The classes started in the fall of 1996. The classes were for 7th-12th grade and the first graduation was in 1999.
At the beginning, Bob & Jane Harvey were the directors with Don & Joyce Self as assistant directors. When the Harveys moved, Don & Joyce became the directors and stayed such until around 2007. As some classes were added they were held at Christian Fellowship Church in Ashburn, with the Spanish classes still at the teacher’s house. Not long after, Jenny & Chris Nicotra became the directors.
By 2010 HEARTS was being held at GUMC with Jenny Nicotra as the director, and soon after Linda Garnier took over the role. It was in this time that the acronym HEARTS took on the additional moniker “for the Lord.”
